of Australians believe that Aerosol cans are not recyclable.

Australian households consume over 11 aerosol cans per person per year, and more than 40% of these cans are not recovered. The truth is, Aerosol cans are completely recyclable for 90% of us, but, due to the lack of public information more than 50% of Australians believe Aerosol Cans are not recyclable. Aerosol cans with remaining contents present a very real risk to disposal vehicles and facilities, so it is important that if you are disposing of an aerosol can it is completely empty to ensure recyclability and safety.

What are Aerosol Cans?

Aerosol cans are packaged liquid products which are stored under high pressure to be propelled out. Products like deodorant, hair spray, insecticides, cooking oil and whipped creams are commonly provided in aerosol cans due to their long shelf life, leak proof seals and performance. Aerosols should be diverted from landfill wherever possible and it is important they are disposed of correctly and classified appropriately.

Aerosols are made from steel and aluminium, both of which are recyclable, although full or half full aerosol cans will be treated as hazardous waste. Most council's can provide a drop off location, however, Redooo can organise collections for hazardous waste if your council is unable to collect your aerosol cans.
